Ah, now you see, I wouldn't have done that, never mind, no harm done, I find it fascinating that whilst he could read, he was unable to write, common enough when that Bloody Corporal was rampaging across Europe, but, less so at this point in time!

Frank,
Just read this post properly
"Has this latter been vetted by the "experts" in another place?"
I understand and no, had it for some time and bought off a reputable dealer (although sometimes no recommendation!)
I think its a good example, but I am not an "expert"

A really lovely and scarce medal, the poor tiger appears to have a hole in it's backside, but, I suppose it should have really!

It is certainly worth taking a little time when buying, all the more so these days, given the need to almost take out a mortgage for such things, it used to be just a school boy hobby, for me at least, however, I doubt if there are very many school boys that could afford to participate today!

With the help of Frank I have managed to locate Pte.Barry's papers online, thanks Frank.

Thomas Barry from the Parish of St.Anns Cork Ireland was 21 years old when he attested for the Royal Munster Fusiliers.
He attested for the Militia on 23rd March 1897 he made his mark with a x his description shows he could not read or write.
Thomas was employed as a labourer with Goulding and Co.a company that had started operating in 1856 and is still in business today.
Thomas is shown as single, quite tall for the period at 5ft 8" he is a Roman Catholic.
His statement of services show he embarked at Albert Dock for South Africa on 23rd February 1900 disembarking at East London on 22nd March 1900
His medical history shows an injury were he is admitted to Netley Station Hospital on 2nd June 1900 which was a fractured R.Fibula.
Thomas states he was knocked by some of his own Regt. on 10th May 1900 at Dordrecht.
So if this was the case he would of been on active service for a month with a broken leg.
He was discharged from hospital in July with the medical Officer stating "can know walk fairly well"
This was a bad judgement when later he was discharged "unfit for service" not likely to be able to march for some time.
It also states his injury was not caused by active service, Pte.Barry's less than distinguished service ended in 1900 when he was invalided home.
