Hello Paul,
About twenty or so years ago I had a chance meeting with Desmond Llewelyn in London, I was checking in to my hotel and I noticed him in the lounge area as I walked in, after taking my luggage to my room, I returned and he was still there.
It was too good a chance to miss, so righty or indeed, wrongly, perhaps, even very selfishly, as he appeared to be alone I walked over and said hello, now the only thing I could remember about him, apart from the obvious, was that he was once a subaltern in the RWF, so I thought I'd break the ice and address him as such.
I had a very brief chat with him before his car arrived and after discussing the BEF and subsequent events of 1940, anyway, I wished him bon chance and thanked him.
The one other question that I had to ask before he left was, just who had he enjoyed working with the most in the famous films, he answered me in most unusual way, with words to the effect, that he was a Welshman and whilst he felt that to be rather special, he then said, but, even we "cannot touch those bloody Irish!"
It is very easy to work out who he was talking about.
I have to say that I was quite unable to disagree with him, but, then, of course, I would say that, good luck with those Irish regiments, Paul.
Kind regards Frank
