I have acquired a 3 clasp (CC/OFS/TVL) QSA to 30288 Pte. A. Stott of the 34th Coy Imperial Yeomanry.

It seems Stott was KIA at Tweefontein on Christmas Day 1901. Could anyone with access to the Times and other histories/publications please shed more light on what happened that day.

Regards

Rory

Alphonso Stott was killed at "Groenkop" near Harrismith he was part of a force protecting the blockhouse line that was actually being made at that point in time from Harrismith to Bethlehem, they were attacked on Christmas eve by a strong force of De Wet's men, from memory, he moved off at dawn on Christmas day with about two hundred pow's, not a great day for Lord Kitchener and of course, far worse for Stott and his family!

However, that is war I'm afraid, moreover, as far as De Wet and the IY went, I have to say that I am not really surprised, De Wet was a superb soldier, a pity he was the enemy.
In addition, very brief look at WO100/125 confirms his South Africa 1901 clasp and his death, in action, on Christmas day, moreover, his original papers have survived too at Kew.

Dark days! :(

Hello Adrian,
Many thanks, I hate "going off half cocked" as I did here, I have a number of IY or "idiot yeomanry" as I call them, including a couple that fought here, but, I have not looked at them for quite some time now, it is, however, all in one of the Times volumes anyway, I just can't remember which, very many thanks again Adrian,
Kind regards Frank

Adrian,
What has happened to the original plaques on these memorials, were they stolen or vandalized or just replaced?

Hello Frank,

I have no idea but I would hazard a guess that your first two suggestions are the most probable  :(

Cheers
