Good Afternoon all
As a complete novice I have purchased my first QSA today (hopefully first of many, as I want to get my Grandsons interested.)
The medal was awarded to 1145 trooper F.Funnell of the SA Light Horse. The attached bars are for "Relief of Ladysmith" and "Cape Colony".
All seems well with the presentation of the medal however having now examined the Medal Roll that came with it Pte F. Funnell ( Regiment No 73 ) is mentioned as having been with the Bechuanaland rifles, and saw service at "Cape Colony" "Transvaal" and "Rhodesia"? No mention of "Ladysmith"
I can find no mention anywhere of F.Funnel with the SA Light Infantry other than on his medal.
Is it possible that the same man fought with the two units? if so it still raises the questions : Why no record with the SA Light Horse and was a bar ever issued for "Rhodesia"?
Any help and advice would be gratefully recieved.
Thank you Tony

Hello Tony and welcome to the Forum!

Congratulations on the purchase of your first QSA today and I, like you, hope that it is indeed the first of many. It is a great way to fire the interest of your grandsons too.

I'll look into your request now and come back shortly.

Best wishes
David

Hello Tony
and welcome to the forum.
I have looked in the Nominal Rolls
www.angloboerwar.com/unit-information/so...-african-light-horse
But could not find your man,had a look on the Ancestry medals rolls but the only F.Funnell is as you say to the Bechuanaland Rifles, again not on the Nominal rolls.
maybe David can offer more advice.
Good luck with your further research.

Paul :)

Tony,

I was worried there for a moment but I think I see what has happened. The document you have the F Funnell of the Protectorate Regiment probably has nothing to do with your man and I am not sure it is serving any useful purpose.

On the medal roll for the SALH is listed one 1145 Pte F Fummell with the clasps CC and RoL as on your medal. The reference for the medal roll entry is WO100/274p46.

These two clasps look to be his full entitlement so the medal is complete.

Best wishes

Paul,

Like you, I had a look at the nominal roll for the SALH but there are very few names listed there compared to the number of people who served in the unit.

I have to thank and give the credit to Ancestry's search abilities for finding Trooper Fummell.

Best wishes
David
