Absolutley brilliant and what a speedy response. So it looks as though it is a simple case of a mis-spelling on the medal ie Funnell rather than the correct Fummel. I imagine the previous owner struggled to find the correct history for the medal and settled as you say for a F.Funnell in the wrong regiment.
Does this mistake take away any of the medals authenticity and historical interest Tony

Tony,

I don't think the difference in the naming between the medal and the medal roll has any material effect on the medal. The medal roll fully authenticates the medal you have.

I have looked to see if I can find out whether the surname is Funnell or Fummell. There is one place that might answer the question and that is the attestation records in the National Archives. There may be an entry for him in WO100/126 boxes 130-138. If present and I would guess that it is, the document would provide some additional biographical information (address, trade, next of kin) etc.

Best wishes
David

The man behind your medal is well worth further research because of the unusual clasp combination, which suggests that, after taking part in the early part of the 'Relief of Ladysmith', he went 'out of action' and did not take part in the Tugela Heights operations and was also absent from all subsequent actions of the SALH in northern Natal, Transvaal and Orange Free State. Was he killed, wounded or sick, or did he simply resign?

Regards
Brett
