Good Afternoon Everyone.....

I am hoping that there is someone here that can help me with regards to some WW1 medals.....

I just received this in the mail today, a jiffy bag waltz more than a major dance.....

A Father and Son Set.....

HEWITT, H.

REG. NO.: 229

BARS: CAPE COLONY, SOUTH AFRICA 1902

REMARKS / HISTORY:

1) Father and Son Set – Son, BWM/Vic., Deal-12275-S Pte. A. Hewitt, R.M.

I know all about the QSA but I am interested what the Regimental Number for his son, the Royal Marine stands for.....

Mike
The number on the WW1 medals struck a chord: I had a look on the Royal Marines Museum site and the prefix "D" followed by four figures and suffix "N" or "S" means a WW1 short service rank in the RM Div. Engineers, Divisional Train, Medical, etc. Obviously, some medals were marked "DEAL" instead of just "D" and clearly your latest is and has five figures.
For more info, it might pay to have a look at the RMM site and they may be able to help with Pte. A. Hewitt, RM.
Regards
IL.

Good Evening......

Thanks for the info I will go and look at the RMM site.....

I have already found out that the father Henry Hewitt was killed in WW1 at the age of 61..... (At least I think it is him but have to look more)

DEAL-12275-S indicates that he was in the Royal Marine Labour Corps. Deal, in Kent, presumably being where they were based.

All is explained here www.genesreunited.co.uk/articles/world-r...medal-roll-1914-1920

Hello Mike

"Deal" was a Division - being a town & Marine barracks in Kent.

Other such divisional prefixes were "PLY" - Plymouth and "CH" Chatham. These guys were "ordinary" marines and not specialists like engineers etc.

For chapter & verse on the RM contact "PeterinKent" on the BMF.

Was the East Surrey man in the relief of O'okiep?

Hello Mike,
Arthur Hewitt's Great War medals are clearly shown in ADM171/169, if I were you I would look at their Service Registers in ADM159.
Regards Frank
