Marthinus Uys served in the Vrede Commando for the duration of the war. He fought at Spion Kop and various skirmishes in the Free State.

Mrs Uys wrote to the Department of Defence in October 1947 in an effort to obtain a pension as widow of an “oud-stryder” and mentioned that Burger Uys had served in four wars - unfortunately no further details were supplied.
