Hello,

I was pleased to have come across the Anglo Boer website. My GG Grandfather John Lowrey/Lowry (depending how it was spelt) fought during the Zulu Wars for the Somerset Light Infantry.
I inhereted a family photograph of John Lowrey which reads on the back "Grandad Lowrey Boer War". It's a 3 x 5 mounted on cardboard, very old. I scanned it and will attach it to this message. I have searched for John Lowreys Boer War records and was told they did not survive. I am hoping to uncover some proof that would show his involvment during the Boar War campaign. My GG Grandfather is standing third from the right in the back row.

Thank you for your help.

:)

Morning

Cracking picture.

It looks like your GGGF was in a local unit such as town guard. There are some town guard attestation papers at the National Archives, London (class WO126).

But I would check the medal rolls on ancestry.com. I had a quick peek and could not find anything.

Did you GGGF stay or emigrate to SA after the Zulu wars?

When was he born?

Good Morning to you Meurig and thank you for your reply.
My GG Grandfather returned to Whitehaven,Cumberland,England after the Boer War. He was born in County Down,Ireland in 1857. He was a career military man throughout his life.
Thank you for the tip about the town guard attestation papers, I hope to investigate this in the near future.

Regards,

SL

Torpedo13,

That is a great picture and I have taken the liberty of adding it to the post text.

Looking on Ancestry, there are few Lowry and Lowrey names but these are mostly for imperial units:

J Lowry 6th Dragoon Guards Carabiniers
J Lowry 1st Battalion Royal Dublin Fusrs
J Lowry 2nd Battalion Lincolnshire Regiment
J Lowry 2nd Battalion Royal Irish Rifles
J Lowry Xi Dragoon Guards (Carabiniers)
J Lowry Prince Alfred's Volunteer Guard

J Lowrey Leinster Regiment
J A Lowrey 5th Royal Irish Lancers

On the Zulu War roll is this man:

138 J Lowery 1st Battalion 13th Prince Albert's Light Infantry

The 13th Prince Albert's LI merged into the Somerset Light Infantry in 1881 which tallies with your information.

There are a few men names Lowery on the Boer War rolls:

J Lowery 1st Alexandra Princess of Wales's Own Yorkshire Regiment
J Lowery 1st Battalion Royal Fusiliers
J Lowery 2nd Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers
J Lowery Marshall's Horse
J A Lowery 5th (R I) Lancers
J H Lowery 22nd Company 2nd Battalion Imperial Yeomanry

Hello David,

Thank you, yes it is a great photo.

138 J Lowery 1st Battalion 13th Prince Albert's Light Infantry
would be my GG Grandfather. I have his Zulu war records.
Thank you for posting the list of Lowry's from Ancestry. I have no clue, as to his involvement in the Boer War except for the photograph. I hired a researcher about ten years ago to look for more records but came up empty.

Thank you

SL,

I hope you don't mind? I ran your image through PhotoShop. This is how it came out.

Kind regards
