my grandfather( george henry alcroftor george harry allcroft)joined up in 1809 to fight the boers & did not return home until 1902 .iwonder if anybody could give any information about him. what regiment he was in or where he fought. i would be most grateful if somebody could tell me anything about him.

Thank you for your first post.

Looking at the Boer War medal rolls, the most likely match is G H Alcroft, 4260 Pte 4th Cheshire Regiment. There's a KSA with 2 clasps listed in WO100/327p218 and a QSA (2) CC OFS on WO100/180p362.

There is some information about the Cheshire Regiment on the site, but nothing about the 4th Btn.

He appears to have been born in Crewe in 1881. There are some service papers for him in WO96 and so available from the National Archives or on line at FindMyPast.
