So, he is wearing medal ribbons and in a officer's uniform ?
Either way, it's pointing to service after the Anglo Boer War.

Hi Dave and Julezz61d,
I have had a good search through the relevant online papers of the day and in particular those of the State of Victoria, Australia and have had no luck with any information related to Charles Thomas Nicholls and service in South Africa or that of HMS Vulcan during the Boer War period.

I did find that 535 Sapper Charles Thomas Nicholls was awarded the Colonial Auxiliary Forces Long Service Medal for 20 years of service which was Gazetted on the 31st January 1902 whilst he was with the Corps of Australian Engineers which would have made him approx. 41 years of age.

His Death Notice that appears below only appears to mention periods of service with the local militia within Victoria -

(The Age, Melbourne, Vic., Tuesday 29 June, 1937)

Hi Trev
Nice work, I think you have nailed it.
Where do you think Sapper Charles Nicholls may have served during his 20 years?

Hi Dave,
Good question mate. I might have to delve in and do a bit more research myself, I'm afraid that Militia and early Volunteer units are not something that I have previously looked into a great deal. I'll let you know what I find........
