Thank you Smethwick, I have found a document around the time Eddy was killed that there was a detachment of Royal Engineers in South Africa. I don't know if they are English or Australian or Victorian Engineers.
I'm beginning to suspect it may be a brother or uncle. You cannot be in the armed forces and not leave a record.
