Hello,
This refers to this thread:-
www.angloboerwar.com/forum/5-medals-and-...lenso?start=12#20609

When I purchased this group I was made aware that DNW had previously sold with the East & West Africa as renamed.
On close inspection I tend to agree, though very well done.
I would firstly like to ask the forums opinions on the renaming and second to ask the opinion to whether they think it detracts from the group.
I don't mean in value I am aware of that (I paid a reduced price) I mean as a group in general.
The recipient earned the medal as shown on the medal rolls, we will never know the reason of the renaming, lots of personal reasons spring to mind.
I am happy to own this group, I tell myself medal collecting is a long term investment but I do not purchase with thoughts of making a few pounds.
This will stay hopefully in my collection for a long time for the simple reason I like it.

Your comments are highly valued.

Paul :)

Hello Paul

The naming fooled one good dealer recently!

I don't have experience with the E&W Africa and this is the first time I have seen this medal. I would need to see a shot of the disc from above to judge the rim thickness.

To me it looks like an official rename, i.e. named medal skimmed and then re-issued - this is not uncommon. However, most dealers use the term "official rename". It certainly doesn't look like a DIY or jeweller's rename.

I won't criticise you for buying this group - I took a long hard look at it (over the internet) when it was recently offered. And I have official renames and un-official renamed medals - like the Rimington's Guides QSA in my collection.

The history behind the group is very good, the Colenso wound makes it better, you paid an appropriate price - and, most importantly, you like it.

Enjoy!

Paul - I agree with Meurig that it's most probably an official rename. DIY and jeweller's renaming sticks out like a sore thumb. Having seen the medals I didn't notice any obvious rim thinning either.

I still thimnk you've made a good purchase bearing in mind the reduced price you paid for the group and the man's entitlement. A verified Sierra Leone to the Queen's must be pretty rare as the regiment isn't shown in British Battles and Medals among the main units that qualified.

Cheers

David

Could well be unique to the regiment - these men were selected to serve on attachment with African regiments.
