Has anyone come across the QSA to 5132 Private Michael Dunne, Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers? My great great uncle and possibly the only family connection to the Anglo Boer War. He served his 12 years (1897 – 1907) with this regiment both in India and South Africa – after leaving the army he emigrated to South Africa to join his brother Alexander and they both worked on the coal mines in Natal, before Michael moved to the gold mines in Transvaal – all three of his sons served in WW2 (one executed by Germans for escaping, after being captured at Tobruk, and joining Italian partisans). Alexander married a half English half Afrikaans girl, so I may still have a relative in the Boer forces waiting to be found.

As regards the Anglo Boer: he arrived on 24 January 1901 and left in October 1903. So he joined just after Queen Victoria died but he got the medal with the Queens head on – one of the quirks of the QSA KSA rules. But I would very much to have it!

The QSA would have had the bars Tvl/OFS/1902. He was also awarded the India Medal bar Punjab Frontier.

Their father William Dunne was with the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers for 28 years - and only got the LSGC medal. Anyone seen that?

Jon,

I hope you are successful with finding these medals.

I had a quick check of the DNW archive but the QSA was not listed there sadly.

Do you know if the regimental museum holds it?

Best wishes

This has a happy ending! A member of the forum saw this post and very kindly got hold of me to say the medal was in his collection and he was happy to part company with it, if it got back to the family. So now it's my most valued QSA! Thank you.

A very good outcome for you! Compliments also to the forum member who parted with the medal. This was all in the best spirit of the medal collecting fraternity.

Regards
Brett
