I hope that you are now well and truly bitten by the Boer War bug! You have got some star items in that part of your collection and, hopefully, there will be many more in future.

I have always liked the local SA artillery units especially the Natal one's.

I was scratching through a box in my safe yesterday when I found this little beauty and just had to post.

Victorian medals have a soft spot for me, however financially are getting a little expensive especially considering the Rand /Pound exchange rate these days!

Thanks Adrian that would be fantastic!

Hi Brian & Frank

The QSA to Marshall came from DNW in 1999. At that stage I was very much interested in unusual units on the QSA, and it was the 1st one to the Ceylon Vol Co that I had ever seen. Even 13 years ago it was not cheap : it hammered at £180-
As is clear from the scans Frank posted, Marshall's Transvaal bar was returned unclaimed.

Thanks Frank,

I have a note in a file that states that the Ceylon Volunteer Company was found from volunteers in the Ceylon Planters Rifle Corps and attached to the 2nd Battalion Gloucesters just before the end of hostilities.

The 1st Battalion arrived in Ceylon with prisoners in August 1900.

The 4th Battalion embarked under Colonel the Earl Bathurst for St. Helena, April 2nd 1900, to furnish the guards over Boer prisoners of war at Deadwood Camp, two Companies under the command of Captain the Hon. A.B. Bathurst being at Broad Bottom camp. The Battalion furnished the guard of N.C.O.s at Kent Cottage over General Cronje.

The 3rd Battalion furnished 124 N.C.O.s and men to the 4th Battalion on St Helena.

Best wishes,

Justin

Thanks for posting the info and Marshall QSA pic, interesting medals these. I wonder why the DNW site did not pick this one up when I requested a search?

Hello Frank,
I realise the post regarding the Ceylon Volunteer Company attached to the gloucesters is rather old now, but, I have just acquired a QSA to this unit and cannot find confirmation of the Transvaal bar. Is there any chance I could have a copy of the Roll and Transvaal bar for 7532 Pte A M Blair.
Many thanks,
Simon
