All,

Munroe's just posted a photo of a 9 clasp QSA:

I remember years ago discussing the possibility of a ten clasp QSA with a South African collector.

Has anyone verified this or seen one?

Best,

Justin

Page 30 of the Stan Kaplan roll for the clasp "RofM" shows Lt. EMERTON J of CinC BG was entitled to 10 clasps on his QSA; RofM, Tvaal, THts, RofL on 1ILH roll and Paar, Dreif,Joh, DH, OFS and Belf on CinCBG roll. Stan Kaplan notes that his service went from 23011900 to 04121900. A busy medal if it still exists! The closest I have ever managed to add was an eight clasp QSA (with KSA in tow) and one of the State clasps would have been "covered" by a battle bar - but is clearly shown as so entitled on the roll.

The rolls have two Emerton's confused.

How could a man do the Relief of Ladysmith, Mafeking and be at Paardeberg?

In the WO127 Discharge Rolls for the ILH - Cpl 406 Joseph Emerton (later Lt) served from 27-9-99 to 30-09-00.

In the WO127 Discharge Rolls for the CinCBG Lt Joseph Emerton joined 01-11-00. Above this entry is one Lt Harry Emerton also a Lt from 01-11-00 and annotated "Tpr 23-1-00". In fact he was number 1 Sergeant-Major. He was an original member of Lord Robert's Bodyguard.

Harry Emerton earned 7 clasps: P,D,J,DH,Bf,CC,SA01
Joseph's entitlement is just 5 clasps: RoM,OFS,T,TH,RoL & KSA

There is (or was) a 10-clasp QSA in Johannesburg's Africana Museum (now MuseumAfrica). It is as follows:

Named to: Tpr M Wilson, Damant's Horse
Clasps: Belmont, Modder River, Relief of Kimberley, Paardeberg, Driefontein, Johannesburg, Diamond Hill, Wittebergen, South Africa 1901, South Africa 1902.

Until my recent 'spring clean', I had a photocopy of an article by Frank Mitchell about this medal. I think it was published in the South African Military History Journal.

Wilson's "10 clasper" is not correct either.

I wrote about it this year for the SAMHJ:

"The ten-clasp QSA mystery resolved
Military History Journal (South African Military History Society) vol 125 No 5 June 2012"

Wilson was entitled to QSA Clasps: B,MR,P,D,J,DH,W,RoK KSA Clasps: SA01,SA02
