Hi All,

Another medal i have is a QSA to 8058 A Bester rifle bde, with 3 clasps, Transvall, South Africa 1902, and relief of Ladysmith, Transvall being closest to medal, Relief of Ladysmith above South Africa 1902. I have a copy of the medal roll and suplement that show his entitlement to the Transvall and 1902 clasps but nothing for the relief of Ladysmith, which is out of sequence on the ribon. Any thoughts on this, he served with the 2nd battalion rifle brigade who have a relief of Ladysmith battle honour, i think the Ladysmith clasp has been added at a later date :(

What do the rivets look like?
Some of these men, very few, were not above adding the odd clasp to which they were not entitled to, from looking at the rolls he is clearly not entitled to the Relief of Ladysmith clasp, but there were plenty of members of his battalion that were.

Hi,

Rivets look flat compared to the other two clasps, i got a feeling it was wrong when i found a KSA medal that was remamed to Bester on an auction site that he is not entitled to by the medal roll, the clasp looks old so i thought he might have added it, would it be worth removing the Ladysmith clasp

Also i have two rifle brigade medals,
one is marked rifle brigade (4th battalion) the other rifle bde (2nd battalion) is this normal

Hello Peter,
I'm not sure to be honest, I might remove the clasp, but, if I knew for sure that he (Bester) had actually worn it and that KSA you mentioned, then I might just leave it.
Yes, the naming sounds okay to me, sometimes medals to the infantry, in particular the early ones, have the battalion number impressed after the mans surname.
