Hi all, I am researching a QSA medal with 6 clasps. The inscription reads "2944 Pte W Avery 2nd E Surrey Regi". The clasps are Laing's Nek, Transvaal, Relief of Ladysmith, Orange Free State, Tugela Heights and Cape Colony. I have found mention of of a W Avery with the correct service number 2944 in WO100/185. But other than that I can't find anything on him. Are the 6 clasps uncommon/rare? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Hello MClose
Welcome to the forum.
6 Clasps are not uncommon but are a fine example that reflects W Avery's time in the conflict. I have attached a brief overview of his regiments unit information for you.

You can add another clasp to his collection of 6, as he was also entitled to the 1901 date clasp. The medal rolls suggest he was Invalided back to England. The 2nd Battalion were in at the beginning of the war 1899. When time permits I will see if his attestation papers are available or at least try and find a first name. I guess we can start to trawl the Wiliams, Walter's and Wilfreds if nothing comes up regarding his paperwork.

Best wishes

Dave.....

Hi MClose
The attached link gives you a good record of the 2nd Battalion's actions during the conflict in South Africa.
Those 6 clasps were certainly well earned.
