Please remind me the circumstances (I appreciate there will be a variety) where a man received only the Relief of Ladysmith but not Tugela Heights. The above chap (photo of medals below) served with the SALH before returning to his role as policeman in Laingburg where he was scouting for Colonel Crabbe in September 1901 (Scheepers/Malan?)

While the RoL clasp was awarded to troops in the relief and north of Estcourt between 15 December 1899 and 28 February 1900, TH has a much narrower scope being awarded to troops (excluding those in Ladysmith) north of an east-west line through Chieveley station between 14 and 27 February 1900.



I imagine those troops who stayed back were perhaps due to illness, line of communication duty or supply duty, with bases at Frere or Estcourt?

Most of Buller's force did move north of Cheiveley during this period but there will always be some who remain behind for these and, no doubt, other reasons.
