Further to my initial question re: Medal Rolls, I've looked at two pages of the 1901 medal roll for the 1st Battalion Royal Munster Fusiliers. There were 40 entries of which 25 had extant service history records of which two had incorrect Christian name initials. Of the 25 histories, two included discharge records that stated the soldier was entitled to SA medals, but their Service records did not indicate entitlement to the medals. Six men received war gratuities, but no medals were indicated on their services histories. Of these six, two had forms annotated with having served in the SA Campaign. Can anyone shed light on why some men would receive gratuities, but apparently not medals and why all the men whose records confirmed their medal entitlement were not annotated with receipt of a gratuity?
TIA,
JS

Good Morning JS......

All I can say is welcome to the joys and frustrations of collecting QSA's and the fun of looking for and through records.....

WO97, in particular, is often incomplete with individual entries not being completed, a man might be discharged before his gratuity was actually paid, for example and medal entitlement is not always shown, on occasion, when it is, the exact clasp entitlement is not, so it becomes necessary to consult WO100.
Notwithstanding, you should normally expect a man who was shown clearly in receipt of a gratuity to be entitled to a medal/medals unless they had been returned or withheld.
