Hi

Is there a rarity to the Laings Nek clasp to South African units?

I am looking at a QSA with:

Elandslaagte, Laings Nek, Relief of Ladysmity, Transvaal and OFS.

It is to the Natal Mounted Infantry.

But there is no value in the Medal Year book for that clasp to South African units.

Thanks for the help.

Ryan

Hardly rare or even scarce Ryan - I can think of any number of Umvoti Mounted Rifles and Natal Carbineers combinations which include Laing's Nek - to name a few.

I'd be interested in the name of the recipient - the roll (David Biggins) contains no NMI with Elandslaagte clasp

Regards

Rory

Interested to hear opinions on this subject as doing a quick check I have found at least 5 South African units that have the Laings Nek bar.....

From Hibbard M.G. The Single Bar Queen's South Africa Medal (Particularly those awarded to South African Units) Cape Town 1964.

Interestingly the only single clasp to a South African, not found by Hibbard, is to a member of the Natal Volunteer Veterinary Corps. He spent the early part of the war in the Laboratory in Pietermaritzburg before "doing" Laing's Nek and then disappearing of to Dublin to read Veterinary Medicine.
Looking for Salutries, Salootries and Veterinary Duffadars.
I collect primarily QSAs to Indian Recipients.
