I thought it was about time that I gave an update on my progress on this man. As I have said some of my problem is the sheer volume of research you can do on a family of this calibre -mine are all lowly labourers and bootmakers so you need to pick your parents carefully.
The original Lascelles would have apparently accompanied William the Conqueror to Britain as De Lascell but I cannot get his line back past about 1400. One of his ancestors was a Colonel Francis Lascelles (1612-1667) who was a member of Parliament and a member of Cromwell's Army. He sat in on the trial of Charles the 1st but was not present on the day the death sentence was passed and did not sign the death warrant- this proved to be an immensely smart move when the Monarchy was restored and the pursuit of all those who signed the death warrant and were perceived to have committed regicide commenced-this did not stop him from a fine.
In about 1730 the Lascelles interests moved to the West Indies and a Lascelle was appointed Collector of Customs in Barbados and became a money lender- the 1817 Survey of Slaves has the Lascelles owing 320 slaves. Needless to say they accumulated wealth on a vast scale enough for a future Lascelle to be made a Baron-he had no issue and the Earl of Harwood was created in the early 1800's. The grounds of Harewood House were landscaped by Capability Brown- need I say any more.
My mans grandfather was the 5th son of the earl of Harewood-future generations of the titled line now at the 7th Earl included notable events such as marrying George V's daughter Prince Mary and being the Queens cousin.
My man's father was Walter Richard Lascelles who was a colonel in the Rifle Brigade and included action in the Indian Mutiny, China, Northwest Frontier and Egypt 1880's.
Alfred Lascelles was born in Ireland in 1973-where exactly I don't know but his father must have been posted there at some stage. He attended Malborough College and was a gentleman cadet at Woolich.
I would dearly like to find a photo of him-surely the Royal Horse Artillery must have had reports or magazines or the like. When I can figure out how to resize the photo I have taken of the medal I will post a photo.
