Good Morning Lew......

His number falls within the block for the 1st Volunteer Service Company..... They do not always have VSC on the medal naming...... Do not know why, maybe it is the way that the names and units were submitted to the mint.....

Both the medal and clasps are verified in WO100/179, the medal and first three clasps are issued of the main roll of the 2nd Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers, the remaining two clasps are issued from the supplementary roll in the same volume, however, this latter is titled 1st Volunteer Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers, WO100/179 is available at Kew or online.
The modus operandi for members of the Volunteers was to join the Army, normally on a short service engagement of one year, to actually get to serve in South Africa, then you simply reengaged as required, Charles Ford served in South Africa from the 19th of March 1900 until the 12th of May 1902, with the 2nd Battalion, after enlisting, the method, as mentioned, on the 31st of January 1900 at Bury, as you would expect.
A nice medal, to a superb regiment and earned the hard way.
