Does anyone know what the annotations mean on my grandfathers medals rolls for the Kings and the Queens South African medal and clasps.
His name was Robert Maguire 6415 of the Royal Irish Fusiliers.
Thanks.

Sug,

The Supplementary roll (WO100/205p98) shows the CC clasp crossed through and a note saying 'also entitled to this clasp (transferred 2nd Battalion). There must have been a subsequent decision to strike out the CC clasp.

The KSA roll (WO100/345p58) shows entitlement to the KSA (2) SA01 SA02. No remarks.

The QSA roll (WO100/205p40) lists the clasps OFS and Tr. CC entitlement was added later. The note refers to the CC clasp and says it was issued 27 April 1905 off 68/87/792.

The reference 68/87/792 goes back to the Supplementary roll where the entitlement to the CC clasp was initially recorded. I think that the CC clasp was crossed off the Supplementary Roll and added late to the QSA roll with the reference being added to justify the addition to the QSA roll.

If you have his medals, is the CC clasp present? By being issued late there is a chance it is loose on the ribbon or not present.

Kind regards
David

Hi djb,
Thanks for that.
My Grandfathers KSA and his QSA medals are missing. I was hoping the annotations would give some clues. At least I know what I am looking for.
His British war Medal and Victory Medal were both returned and this was noted on the rolls.
On a more positive note, I have just purchased his 1914 Star and it is presently winging its way to me from America.
Thanks again.
