Good Morning Everyone......

I just picked up this interesting piece......

169 Private J.D. REDCLIFFE, C.M.S.C., bars, Cape Colony and South Africa 1902

On the medal roll it is listed as "C.C.F. Coy"......

Can anyone tell me what C.C.F. stands for ??????? (Cape Colony Forces?????)

In the remarks section is the notation "St. John's Ambulance Brigade 1856"

If he was SJAB attached to CMSC then why would his medal not be named SJAB......

Thanks

Mike

Hi Mike

The comment re SJAB applies to the man above C Russell.

I agree with your understanding of CCF, can't expand on it any further.

A nice one Mike

Your man is most likely James Douglas Redcliffe born in Lancashire in 1878.

He was a Glass Cutter by trade and sailed from South Africa back to the UK in 1907.

He appears as such in the 1901 England census which ties in with his SA 1902 clasp as a late entry to the war. He is also in the 1881/1891 and 1911 census' and passed away in 1938. He never married (poor bloke)

Mike,

C.C.F. normally refers to the Cape Colonial Forces, established in December 1901.

My interpretation is that Redcliffe was in the C.M.S.C. Company attached to the C.C.F. No sinecure given Smuts's invasion of the Cape.

Best wishes,

Justin
