I have a QSA to Lt. H.L. Wood of the East Griqualand Mounted Volunteers with clasps CC and SA 1901. Whilst researching this chap prior service with both the Cape Mounted Rifles as well as the 1st Imperial Light Horse came to light.

I now wish to reconstitute the clasps he was entitled to on the medal but before I do so I would like members of this forum to apply their minds to what these clasps should be. To this end I append the 5 different medal rolls whereupon his name appears for this purpose.

My humble contribution (opinion) is that he is entitled to Cape Colony, Defence of Ladysmith, Relief of Mafeking, Transvaal and SA 1901 but am stumped by the very clear "rule" that states that the CC clasp would not be issued along with e.g. the RoM.

Where possible I have amended the rolls to highlight only the sections where he appears.

Please assist.

Rory

Well, for what it is worth, I would leave the existing medal alone and obtain the other clasps to slip on the ribbon. Of course, a couple of those clasps are going to be expensive! Yes, I appreciate the anomaly of RofM and CC appearing together. Of course, the medal is not mine - so it is up to you. Some of the notations on the rolls are a bit hard to read. Is it possible that there was a duplicate issue?
Anyway, some good detective work in establishing his clasp entitlement.

IL.

Hello Rory,
Clearly the medal you have was actually issued to him for his service in the EGMV, interestingly, I see he was discharged with ignominy from the CMR, in addition, from a look at these rolls, a second medal existed, but, was clearly returned, I would suggest this was his only actual medal, it is both correct, in that it was issued as it is and well documented, although, he is entitled to, in effect, a medal with other clasps, I would certainly not alter to one you have in any way whatsoever, to do so, would take away it's originality and create a forgery which anyone would be able to see through.

Thanks for the input chaps. Frank I do agree although it seems a great pity that the clasps can't be added to the medal he wore especially seeing as he was wounded with the ILH in Ladysmith and had nothing to show for it.
