I have just bought a Bronze QSA, the unusual thing is this has no suspender or hole for it and it doesn't look like it has ever been mounted.

It does not have a name and the edge shows grinding marks all the way around it. Has the type 3 reverse

I bought it as a curiosity and was wondering if anyone has come across anything like this before

Hi Holyoake and welcome to the forum.
Has the hole for the suspender not been plugged between the "N" & "A" of "REGINA"? All bronze medals had the type III reverse and would have been suspended at the mint particularly if in the past it had been named. Great pity the name has been removed in the past.

Hi
I have had bronze unmounted disks (raised dates and 2nd reverse) in my collection but sold them via City Coins.
As such I was interested and looked at this when it was on offer but decided not to buy. It is a funny piece : the marks on the edge even reminded me of a casting.
The A of REGINA is on top of the crown and not well to the left of it and the letters on the obverse do not have serifs. The details on Victoria's clothing are very flat.
I felt that it could not have been an early pattern before the dies for the QSA were finalised as it was undated.
It will be helpful for comments from other Forumites if you show the reverse and edge.

Hi thanks for the comments, I agree Henk about the position of the crown and her cloths looking flat. I have also noticed that she does not have any earrings either.

Don't think it is is a casting, it has a diameter of 36mm and is quite heavy being around 27g

I have attached a couple of photos hope that helps

David I can confirm that this has not been plugged, that mark will polish off

A bit of a mystery this one

Mark

If not a trial striking or design sample then why isn't this a copy of some sort?

In my opinion this is spurious. The outer edge consists of two concentric rims on genuine medals; the inner one slightly depressed than the outer one. This is absent on this medal. A similar medal, but one designed to deceive, was reported in the OMRS Journal Vol 42 (2) p 101
