Hi

Does anyone know if it is possible to identify a nurse as being from one of the South African colonies, as opposed to someone from Britain?

She is on the roll for the Johannesburg Civilian Hospital but I can't find anything else. With a name like AD Schutte I would suggest she was a local to the Transvaal?

Cheers
Ryan

Hi Ryan
Sheila Gray's 1993 publication dealing with service records of British and Colonial Women in the SA War has the following List of Contents:

The book is still copyright-restricted but David may be able to get permission to post it on the Forum. It is very seldom seen on the market and the ISBN number is
0-473-01926-4
I last corresponded with her in December 1993 when her address was
Mrs Sheila M Gray
54a Towai Street
St Heliers
Auckland 1005
New Zealand
That was before the days of e-mail!
Henk

Thank you Henk. I am going to try to find it, it looks a worthwhile book. I think I have a local South African nurse which I am pleased about.

Ryan

I have checked my notes and she was not one of the 7 local Boer nurses appointed by the Transvaal authorities, along with the 17 French Nuns at the Johannesburg Hospital on 22nd May 1900.

Thanks Jon.

With a name like Schutte where would she have come from? I would think from one of the colonies.

Hiya - the nurses in South Africa are in my database at britisharmynurses.com and include some that Sheila did not record, as well as information beyond the medal rolls.
