A friend has asked for help in finding out more about his Great Grandfather, 867 Corporal George Allewell, Nesbitt's Horse, who was awarded the QSA with clasps Cape Colony, Paardeberg, Driefontein & Johannesburg.

He found out that the medal was sold on an auction in the UK a number of years ago, but was unable to establish contact with the purchaser.

He would be grateful for information about his GGK's service, other biographical information, and the present whereabouts of the medal.

Allewell appears to have been a Corporal in the Western Province Mounted Rifles and a Trooper in Nesbitt's Horse, whilst he is shown in WO100/278, his medal and four clasps appear to have been issued from WO100/262 on the 3rd of July 1903, he does appear in the supplementary roll in WO100/262 regarding the South Africa 1901 clasp, his name is shown as Attwell, Allwell, Allewell and so on, it would certainly be interesting to see the medal.
Surviving rank and file papers for Nesbitt's Horse are in WO126/95-98, he appears to have served in the regiment from the 28th of December 1899 to the 24th of May 1901, the regiment was, however, for official purpose, only raised on the 29th of December in Grahamstown.

Many thanks, Frank. I am sure that the enquirer (also a Frank) will be very pleased to have that information.

Since the medal has been on the market at least once before, it may well reappear one day, and, hopefully, it will then be reunited with George Allewell's descendants.

Regards
Brett

Afternoon Brett,
I always feel it is a great pity when a family manage to loose a medal or two, but, I hope it turns up for your friend, Allewell was a founder member of the regiment and SAMIF medals with those clasps are not all that commonplace, a regiment would have to be in actual existence quite early on, in the first place, of course.
Kind regards Frank
