This post is especially for David B who way back in 2009 was trying to assist me with this KSA to the above chap.

On every roll, both nominal and medal, he is recorded with no. 60 and yet, as the photos below show, his number on the medal was 9490. The medal has in no way been tampered with. We collectively racked our brains as to how this could be until, this morning, I solved the problem!!

Have a look at the attached medal roll and look at the annotation in the left column - voila!! it reads 9490 which must point to clerical error when the medal was being impressed! Instead of 60 they used the number in the left column.

I wonder how many other "mistakes" there are out there?

Regards

Rory

Another founder member of the SALH too, how very odd though, given WO100/361.

Hi Frank

I hadn't thought of the SALH connection much. Reason being, and here look at the medals below, is that Garden's KSA is "APPENDED" to that of John Whittaker of the NMR. They are now now as you se them when I got them from the family and no-one was any the wiser as to who Garden was or how it came to pass that Whittaker had obtained his KSA..

His QSA is still out there somewhere.

Regards

Rory

Hello Rory,
That is a great shame, still, at least you have got a good QSA with the lot.

Further to my above post - that font of eternal colonial wisdom - 20th Century Impressions of Natal (published in 1906) has a reference plus photos of the Phoenix Buffet in Durban owned "by those two young gentlemen W Nicol Garden and his brother Norman Geddes Garden.

The write-up is effusive and also refers to William's prior service with the ILH and in India and Egypt although several people of my ken have applied their not inconsiderable minds to tracing this previous service to no avail.

The entry specifically states on page 475,

"It may be mentioned that Mr. W.N. Garden has seen a condsiderable amount of service with the Imperial regular forces in India and Egypt, also with the South African Irregulars during the late Boer War."

Regards

Rory
