I was hoping that someone may be able to assist me with a small problem I have encountered recently.

I generally collect military medals to recipients with a CHISHOLM surname. I recently came across a QSA Medal named to a 2458 SERGT Wm. CHISHOLM 107th IMP.YEO. with 4 clasps (Cape Colony, Orange Free State, Transvaal and South Africa 1901).

I have checked the QSA medals rolls on this website as well as the WO100/122 Rolls which I downloaded from the National Archives website. Unfortunately there would appear to be no such individual listed although I noted that there was a 24254 Pte. Wm. CHISHOLM of the 107th Imperial Yeomanry listed which, on the face if it would appear to be a different individual due to the differing regimental Rank and Number.

Based on the memberships extensive knowledge of the Boar War and associated QSA Medal Rolls is it likely that the medal marked to 2458 Sergeant Chisholm is officially genuine as the Medal Rolls I have checked may not be fully comprehensive or is it more than likely that this medal has simply been made up with a name of an individual purporting to have been issued with a QSA Medal.

Hope you can help with this conundrum!

Look forward to hearing from you

Best wishes

Hello Norman,
Is the medal you mention officially named, I am thinking it will not be, if you would care to post a photograph, we can have a look at the naming on this particular medal.

Hello Frank,

I have only two photographs of the medal in question. One of the medal itself and one of the rim partly showing the naming some of which has been obscured by refection. I hereby attached these for your further consideration.

Best wishes

Hello Norman......

I may be wrong but it looks as if it has been skimmed and renamed to me.....

Have expanded your pictures......

Agreed, it certainly did not come from the mint like that!

Hi Mike and Frank,

I think you both may well be right. I have has a closer look at the photos and it would appear that the lip on the edge of the rim is a little uneven in places indicating that material may well have been removed before the medal was then possibly renamed in full or in part. I became suspicious of the legitimacy of this medal especially when the rank and number of this individual did not correlate with names on the QSA Rolls I checked. As a result I decided to pass on this one.

Many thanks again for all your prompt help and assistance which is greatly appreciated.

Best wishes

Norman
