We have a thread for the DTD and DSO.

Does anyone know how many DTD and DCM's there were? If anyone has a list of the South African DCM's I will go through the ABO roll and find the matching names.

Does anyone have an example?

Or an example of an ABO and a DCM?

I would think there would be fewer, as:
  • An officer would more likely become an officer again.
  • An officer would probably be a bit older and is less likely to be in such an active situation as the normal NCO. But that depends on the individual.
  • I have only ever seen one, but I have had a sheltered existence.

I would have thought I would have seen an ABO and a DCM before though? Should be as likely as an South African QSA and DCM, just fewer in number?

Anyone got any examples?

Cheers
Ryan

Ryan,

It must be very rare.

Here is Michael Kaplan's example from his last auction:

My understanding is that many of the DSO's, MC's and DCM's awarded to South Africans during WWI 'came with the rations' in 1918. Many (? most or all) of the regiments that served in GSWA were given one each of these medals and, as a general rule, a senior officer got the DSO, a lower ranking officer got the MC, while the senior NCO got the DCM. I do not know if this also applied to GEA veterans.

Since the DTD was awarded to senior officers in the Boer War, it is most likely that they would also have been senior officers in WWI, hence the common DTD/DSO combination. I suspect that the DTD/DCM must be extremely rare. Perhaps the one on Kaplan's sale is unique?

Regards
Brett

Feast on this!

It isn't mine, no idea who owns it but I found it on another forum and have stolen the picture as it was something I never knew existed and quite made my day.

It is to Lt SI Visser of the Potchefstroom Commando.

Cheers

I don't recall seeing such a combination before. Wow!
