Today I picked up a no bar QSA to 9 Cpl J Tennant Barcly East Town Guard. The medal was suspended on a brass bar inscribed, "Kimberley Siege 1899-1900 " It was accompanied by a half of a British flag , a leather pouch and Corporals stripes. If it was Barclay West Town guard, I could be persuaded that there was a Kimberley connection, but Barclay East is 370 kms from Kimberley. I see that there was a Pte J Tennant who earned a QSA with a Siege of Kimberley bar in the KTG. Could this be the same man and he was issued 2 medals, one with a DoK bar.
I should appreciate any suggestions.
Regards
Mike

Mike,

An intriguing QSA. John Tennant is listed on the Barkly East TG roll but there is nothing to connect him to the J Tennant on the KTG roll - except his medal.

The medal to Pte J Tennant KTG has been on the market and it would be explainable if the same man was issued with two QSAs as they were not linked on the rolls. Perhaps the medals became separated? Was you purchase from the family in SA?

My DoK roll says 'Civil Service Redoubt. QSA (1). Glendining Mar 90. Spink Dec 90 £95'

Does anyone know when the Barkly East TG was mustered? With no 9 and rank of corporal, I presume John was an early recruit.

Best wishes
David
