Many thanks David. His LSGC medal has his 1KDG no. and I have the citation for that. Also I have him coming home for the last time on board ship in 1911 as part of the 1911 census, so I am happy that he was in 1KDG. He is also on the QSA medal roll so thats ok. I even have his medal card index and his citation for the MID in the London Gazette for WW1, so that's all ok!! The one thing that is missing is his Boer War service - typical

What is even more frustrating is that his elder brother's (2 Glocs)service records survived - I'm sort of stuck now...

I was hoping there would be some service or pension papers available for to provide you with more information. As you say, there is no doubt he served in the 1st DG the question is more when he transferred. Perhaps he completed his initial term of service and re-enlisted.

Which monarch is on the LS&GC? Do you have his number from the MIC?

Best wishes
David

With regard to his service He would have joined 1 Glocs 1893 - if he left and rejoined would he still be eligible for his LSGC medal? As he only has the Natal bar, I am wondering whether he was shipped out of SA before Ladysmith ??ill and then transferred to 1DG in Aldershot.

Mark,

I went back to the Gloucesters medal roll and see there is an addition to the top of roll saying the men it lists have now left the Regiment. The roll was signed in Colombo and is dated 11 June 1902. So that is one step forward.

The Gloucester Regiment had a memorable start to the war and he may well have been very involved in the early stages: angloboerwar.com/unit-information/imperi...cestershire-regiment

He isn't listed as captured at Farquhar's Farm.

So, maybe wounded/taken out of the line prior to October 30th, other wise he would have been in Ladysmith?
