It is an interesting case as to why he received just the Natal clasp. I have seen the clasp issued to those taken prisoner before the siege began and the released after the siege ended. These men often went on to gain other clasps. He fits the profile of someone like that but the records don't support it. It might be worth a call to the Gloucester Museum to ask how men in the 1st Battalion were able to earn just the Natal clasp as your ggf is certainly not the only one.

I looked in the newspapers for a casualty entry but did not find one.

Many thanks for all your help. I also feel a trip to the Museum at Gloucester is in order, however that will have to wait for a few months! I will provide a picture of the medal shortly
