I have acquired a rather nice group to a E.(J) Vede of the Royal Berkshires. The QSA/KSA are to the Berkshire Regiment and come with a WWI pair to the same outfit.(on the high seas en route to me)

Sadly, I have just learnt that he was also awarded the Military Medal the whereabout sof which I am trying to ascertain.

Vede's papers which are on Ancestry state that he was awarded "Certificate as having served with M.I. in the field during the South African Campaign dated 1.7.03"

I have never heard of such a certificate - does anyone have any examples? and how does one go about researching M.I. service as in this case?

Regards

Rory

Good Morning Rory......

I have never heard about these either..... Could they possibly be a form of Welcome Home certificate..... Cannot wait to see if there is something out there as you know Paper is the first thing that goes in the trash.....

Regarding certificates, I did encounter such an endorsement when researching a chap's medal in my collection; he went out with the West Yorks and ended up in the M.I. His Military History Sheet is endorsed (under section 4 - Passed Courses of Instruction) as "Cold Shoe, Authy OC 4th MI Standerton 22-4-03" and "Awarded M.I.Certificate d/1.10.04 Qualified as farrier". Another History sheet for the same man expands to recording of the "Certificate, Cold Shoeing, Standerton, 22-4-03".
As a matter of interest, "cold shoeing" is an alternative method of shoeing a horse with a ready-made shoe and without the services of a forge.
As far as researching MI service is concerned, this can be difficult and often comes up with nothing. If still available, a chap's "statement of the services" may indicate his specific unit. If a specific unit can be identified, a trawl through the SAFF Casualty list may show a unit's work in the field.
Good luck
IL.
