I've just won what I think is a good bargain on an auction site to the above chap.

He was with the 3rd Gloucester Regt. who I understand were deployed as guards of the POW's sent to St. Helena and were never in South Africa.

Could someone shed more light on this little known side of things.

The medal is a no clasper.

Rory,

A great acquisition.

Pte Haines was part of the 3rd Btn Gloucester Regiment and is listed on WO100.183 p508. The roll says he was attached to the 4th Gloucesters in St Helena. He arrived in St Helena on 13 Jan 1901 and you're correct that he probably did not step foot in South Africa.

Other than camp and guard duty, I am not aware what else the regiments did.

Best wishes
David

Born in 1881, Cornelious Haines was from St Simons, Bristol. There are some papers for him in the TNA/FMP.

Good hunting!

Thanks David

I have his papers from FMP - he was discharged for sentencing in a "felony case" I would be interested to see what it was all about but the Old Bailey records show up nothing - it must have been elsewhere.

Is it a Queens Mediteranian medal? Should be and that would explain why no clasps.

Hi Ryan

Nope - the medal says "South Africa"

Why would it be mediterranean? St Helena is in the Atlantic Ocean.
