After suffering a medal drought since August 2015, I have acquired two medal groups that relate to my current fixation with the settlers of southern Natal and their local regiment, the Border Mounted Rifles. The medal groups, which were awarded to Captain H B Andreasen and Major J R Greer, are good subjects for research. Greer's group is accompanied by three shooting medals (one gold, two silver), and a silver spoon.

Of interest in the case of Greer, but apparently not directly related to him, is a BMR Marksman's Badge, which is shown below. No names are inscribed on the disc, and I am puzzled as to how and to whom it was awarded. Might it have been a 'floating trophy' that was awarded to the champion shot of the year indicated by the date on a clasp, and then passed on to the next year's winner?

Those are highly desirable acquisitions Brett. You are to be congratulated!

I look forward to seeing their write-ups. Please don't hesitate to ask should you require any assistance with your research.

Afternoon Brett

Those are both excellent new additions to your collection and I look forward to reading more about them.

I have always had a policy of quality over quantity, some times due to my disposable income being non existant, I have missed some medals but have been able to obtain others after a long worthy wait.

Thank you for your comments and kind offer. As usual, I hope that Jenny will be helping with the PMB Archives searches, but I may still prevail on your kindness.

Thank you for your comments. I wish I had your collecting policy when I started. I was old then, but not wise. I now try to be more discriminating.

There has been a development with the mystery of the Marksman's Badge. Both it and Major Greer's assemblage came originally from the same dealer, although several month's apart. I am now inclined to think that the badge did in fact belong to Greer. His other shooting awards are dated 1906 and 1907, while the final date on the Badge is 1908, so perhaps this was when Greer was at the peak of his marksmanship.
