Two great photos Berenice. EJ Gaulter had served on HMS Powerful before being drafted ashore for the siege.

A very impressive headstone. Thank you for showing it. I wonder how often it is that you visit a church or cemetery and find NO link to the Boer War?

Brett

Good question. Off the top of my head I'd guess that something like 1 in 10 of the churches I've looked in have a Boer war-related plaque. Headstones with mentions of the Boer War are scarcer - Lancaster Cemetery, which is my nearest big cemetery, has three such headstones whereas I don't recall coming across any in the various Stoke-on-Trent cemeteries.

I called in at Holy Trinity Church, Bolton-le-Sands, this morning....

and then in Lancaster Library. This clipping is from the Lancaster Observer & Morecambe Chronicle, 7.12.1900.
