Astonishing. This illustrates how oral history can leap centuries.She married him in 1936 when he was 93 and she was 17. It suggests some South African War widows are still with us.

Incredible news. In the late Tony Horwitz.s excellent 1998 book, 'Confederates In The Attic,' he interviewed the woman who, it was then believed, was the last-surviving Civil War widow, and she died in 2004.

Something like three years ago I exchanged a few emails with the daughter of a member of the Imperial Yeomany, and she was in her early 90s.
