Laurie | John Haliburton | | Captain | He was killed in action near Philippolis April 12th, 1901. He was the eldest son of Lieutenant General J W, Laurie, MP, of 47 Porchester Terrace, London. He was born August 1864, at Halifax, Canada and educated at the Royal Military College, Kingston, Canada. He entered the Royal Lancaster Regiment September 1885, was promoted Captain July 1895, and employed with the Colonial Forces in Canada from October 1889, to October 1895. Captain Laurie was a member of the Polo team which won Prince Henry of Prussia's cups on the China Station 1898 and 1899, was the winner of the Sultan of Johore's cup for the shooting championship of the Straits Settlements in 1899, and also won two silver cups at the Royal Military Tournament for tent pegging and lemon cutting. He went to South Africa with the mounted infantry company of his battalion January 1901, and was killed whilst endeavouring to assist one of his men who had been wounded.
