Dear Tinker,

Sorry to enter this thread late but I think that he may have served with other companies as well.

From your posts and the Doncaster connection I think it likely that he served with the 66th (Yorkshire) Company and/or the 111th Company (Yorkshire Dragoons) that you mention.

It may be that he was discharged in the UK through the 7th for administrative reasons. His service papers will reveal which company/companies he served with in South Africa. Also important will be which company's medal rolls he is listed under and any comments in the remarks column.

Best wishes,

Justin

Hello Tinker,

Great news. I am sure that Audrey will come up trumps. She will also be able to pull the SAC papers for you if you wish.

I certainly hope so, Adrian! My husband always believed that John was a magistrate, from the 1920s on, which is why it would be so helpful to have the info in the SAC papers to either dispel or confirm that belief.

Justin, as Frank has demonstrated, we're pretty sure that John was in the 7th Coy., but he may well have been co-opted into other companies as needs dictated. (He was, in fact discharged via the 111th Coy. at Shorncliffe.)

I have just come across a letter published in the Yorkshire Evening Post, Feb 1902, which was written by "well-known cyclist, Luther Myers, of Pudsey and Bradford," of the 7th Coy. He was one of those who volunteered at the same time as John, and was in General Elliot's division, at the time of writing, preparing to move on De Wet. He describes their movements around the Orange Free State between April 1901 and Feb 1902, in quite some detail! Towards the end of this period he appears to have been patrolling the Lindley Road, under Colonel De Lisle.
