Hello Vivienne,

Could this be a contender?

There is a John Anderson on the Boer POW Database.
He was captured at the Battle of Magersfontein (11 Dec 1899), and would therefore have been under General Cronje.

Age: 28 (giving a birth year of c. 1871 rather than 1870)
Address: Johannesburg
District: Heidelberg
Field Cornetcy: Hygare's
POW Camp: Deadwood, St Helena
POW No: 504

Although no second name is recorded this doesn't necessarily mean he didn't have one.

Hello Vivienne,

I went through the military and civilian personnel inside Mafeking during the siege and, which there are some men of this surname, he is not listed.

It is certainly true that some families had members fighting on both sides and the farmers around Mafeking were encouraged to join or support the Boer cause so he could have been an unwilling or willing recruit.

Best wishes
David

Good day Elmarie

This was most helpful, thank you. We do have a photo, that looks similar to this person. Family story goes that he was captured, but is yet to be confirmed.
Is there any where that I can verify the date of this persons release?

Thank you in advance
Vivienne

Good day David

Thank you for your email.
I do think that this confirms, he was not part of the Siege of Mafeking.

Regards
Vivienne

Hello Vienne

Unfortunately we do not have any name lists of the pow's that came back to South Africa. All we know is that most of them returned at the end of 1902.
