For an officer to be blacklisted he would have had to have committed a serious breach of regulations which could have included desertion.

Thank you kindly David,

I am sure there must have been some serious offence committed.
James had quite a temper. Maybe this was his undoing.

Regards,
Gloria.

The surname Riach is an unusual one and on an impulse, I had a glance through "Boer War Services of Officers". There were two officers with that surname listed with service in that Campaign; Capt. G.H. Riach (Royal Arty) and Captain W. Riach (RAMC). Additionally, there were two others with service in earlier campaigns. Relatives of James Grant Riach? If you are unaware of them or if it fits into your research, I can post a cut from BWSofO upon request..
And I am pretty confident that the Forum did feature some time ago an example of an Officer on the Black List redeeming himself with another unit and being awarded a QSA. Wish I could recall where it featured. Incidentally, Commissioned ranks feature prominently through the pages of Smith's "South Africa Medal/Clasps Not Approved"; many marked "Forefeited" or "Withdrawn" but only four Black Listed. With no marginal notes either).

IL.

Thank you kindly Linneyl for this. I am certainly very interested in anything to do with the Riach's/Grant-Riach's. I cannot place GH or W Riach. They may not be a part of my research. If I had first names to work with, I could be certain.
Anything to do with James is certainly of great interest to us as a family.
Regards,
Gloria.
