djt,

It is difficult to say from the picture. From the first, the rim does look a little thinner towards the bottom on the medal but this may be the camera angle.

While the naming looks fine to me, is the rim smooth in between the letters and words?

Kind regards
David

Des, David and Brett
I didn't buy into this one before as David and Brett have seen far more QSAs than I. I take the point about the "high" naming; as well as the seeming dip in the rim over "Roach" and the thinner rim towards the bottom of the medal when it is viewed from the front. Sometimes one sees QSAs that do appear to have a thinner rim towards the bottom of the medal (local author Clive Johnson in "Australians Awarded" ascribes this to a design flaw). In my opinion, the question of the naming on the Roach QSA can only be settled by a series of measurements around its diameter using a good digital micrometer. If there is a distinct variation, it could be officially renamed.
In conclusion, I once owned a long RN group in which the BWM had been impressed so far off the centre of the rim that the naming was touching the very edge!

IL.

Gentlemen,
I have to say that I would not be happy with this medal and I would not buy it simply because they really are not rare and it would always be possible to get another similar example to the regiment, we are talking about a battalion here after all.
That said, I don't think it has been renamed either, of course, there is really nothing wrong with officially renamed medals and in the case of some units, a renamed medal is not so unusual, although, not the case with the regiment in question here.

David,

Yes, it is smooth in between the letters and and words. Using a magnifying glass, I cannot see any traces of another name having been on there.

Frank,

Thank you for your reply.

I have also shown this medal on the BMF and the replies were positive. Thank you all for replying.

Regards,

Des

Hello Des,
Whilst I don't really like it very much, it does not mean to say it is not original, but, if you just wanted that combination to the regiment, it is easy to get another, however, if you are collecting that regiment, then you need to have it.
Regards Frank

Hello Frank,

I already have a medal to the RDF with this combination of clasps. However, this recipient was a casualty and that makes it a bit more special to me. Thanks again.

Regards,

Des
