Thank very much for your help. Photos posted below. First two are QSA. Second two are KSA. Are you thinking the naming might be dubious/unofficial?

It's quite a long shot, but as I mentioned at the start of this thread the only R Charnock I could find in the medal roll was in 4th King's Liverpool (wrongly described as 4th King's German Legion in the Ancestry search) and there is one individual on the sheet containing Charnock's name who is highlighted as having previously been in 3rd East Lancs and getting some of his medal entitlement there. I wondered if the R Charnock in the Liverpools roll might also have previously been in the E Lancs- but, presumably, some of his entitlements, which were additional to those shown on the Liverpool's roll i.e. OFS and SA 1901 should still show on an E Lancs roll?

Viewing your latest pics, it looks to me that the letters of the naming are not as well lined up as is the case with official machine impressing. Have you tried measuring the diameters of the medals to see if they are lopsided? If so, looks like renamed. What a pity.

IL.

Thanks IL. It's disappointing if that's the case. I bought these some years ago when I was oblivious to the existence of such things as medal rolls- I know better these days. Fortunately they didn't cost the earth, and now I probably know why!I'm sure there's a section of the site that deals with naming etc, so I'll have a look at that. Why would somebody do this - simply pretending they had been there and earned the medals? So far as I can tell this soldier with this number existed-you would think his army mates post-war would have known he was at it.

Patrick,

I know what In means about the regularity of the letters. There are no obvious signs of it being renamed and the font is as you would expect. Some letters are irregular, such as the S in East which is lower than the other letters.

There is a man's papers in WO96 which are available at the NA and on line for:

CHARNOCK Roger born 1880 in Warrington, Lancashire. WO96 Militia

These might be worth a look?

Kind regards
David

Thanks for the comments on the naming. I agree that the lettering seems irregular in places, but there's no sign that they have been renamed.

You put me on to the militia lead a while ago and that led me to my conclusions/ findings about Roger Charnock detailed above at 17425 and 17979.

I'd still like to know if it's possible for a man to have genuinely issued medals and clasps and not appear anywhere on the medal rolls. I don't like loose ends and I'd really like to solve this one, one way or another!
