Nice one Paul. Surprise Hill casualties don't come up very often and it was a very sharp and hard fought action. The Rifle Brigade lost 11 KIA, 4 DOW and 32 wounded. I have the QSAs with Defence of Ladysmith clasps to 3766 Pte. C.W. Brooke (KIA) and 4937 Pte. J. Broomhead (DOW).

The Rifle Brigade were entitled to the Khedive's Sudan. They were at Omdurman in regimental strength so the vast majority, if not all, would be entitled to the Khartoum clasp.

The Khedive's Sudan was generally issued to British troops unnamed and they were subsequently named regimentally. However, it seems that the Rifle Brigade didn't bother as all the examples I've seen in RB groups are unnamed. I have a group consisting of Queen's Sudan, QSA CC/DL/OFS/SA02, 1914-15 Trio and Khedive's Sudan to 3865 Sgt.-Col Sgt. G.E. Dullingham and the Khedive's is unnamed.

After confirming Nichol's eligibility you could look for an unnmaed Khedive's Sudan and complete the group. (Same suggestion to Mike too).

Cheers

David

Hello Mike,

Well spotted and of course you are correct.
I knew about the missing Khedives, I also checked for clasps to which he was not entitled.
As Davidh has pointed out in the previous post the RB seemed not to name the Khedives, so it is something to look for.

Paul :)

I always thought that when awarded the Sudan Medal it was always paired with the Khedives Medal.....

Yours does not have one and I have the following in my collection which is missing it also therefore I am assuming that the Rifle Brigade was not entitled....

Hi David,
And thank your comments and advice on the Khedives, if you spot one on your travels let me know ;)
A Sudan was missing from my collection, so this one fitted the bill.

Cheers
Paul :)
