Hong Kong Plague Medal (Private G. Biggs, S.L.I.)

George Biggs was born in the Parish of Llangarren, near Ross, Herefordshire, in 1872. He joined the Shropshire Light Infantry at Shrewsbury on 16 July 1890, aged 18 years 11 months, a labourer by trade. His papers show that he trained as a stretcher bearer in May 1892 whilst the regiment was stationed in Hong Kong, his new qualification no doubt being put to good use during the plague of 1894, for which Biggs received the medal.

He served in the Boer War from November 1899 until August 1902, after which he was discharged.

William Wilkinson a Farm Servant by trade joined the Shropshire Light Infantry on the 16th of February 1891. Promoted to Corporal 12th of April 1894 reduced to the ranks., “Conduct to the Prejudice of Good Order” 27th of May 1896. Mobilised 9th of October 1899 Discharged as a Private 15th of February 1903.

He served Home 16th February 1891 to 20th of December 1891, Hong Kong 21st December 1891 to 21st of December 1894, India 22nd December 1894 to the 31st of January 1897, Home 1st of February 1899 to the 6th of November 1899, South Africa 7th of November 1899 to the 26th of August 1902, Home 27th of August 1902 to the 15th of February 1903, 12 years with the colours.

The trio to Corporal Wilkinson sold last week for a hammer price of £2,000. Totals (inc VAT on the commission for the UK only): £2,480. R48,400. Au$4,130. Can$3,650. US$2,760

Hong Kong Plague 1894 (Sapper J. Hill, R. E.)

Spink note that the published Roll states only 13 medals known to the Royal Engineers; Sapper J. Hill is confirmed on the Roll and this Lot is accompanied by a Spink's brown paper envelope, annotated with '£4.' in ink on the front.

It is a long shot but there is a Sapper J Hill of the REs in the Boer War who could be the same person. His QSA is extant.
