Hi David,

I have attached a couple of shots of the wording.

I know what you mean about sorting out his own medal, this is not be the first time I have come across that in the Legion.

The picture is very good. I think though that the QSA has been renamed at some time. It will be interesting to see if the surname is correct or whether that too has been added.

Is the rim of the medal sharp or slightly rounded?

Hi Mike/David,

Mystery solved.

Using a rubber to clean up the edge and using a high power eye glass clearly shows that it has indeed been ground/polished and then re-engraved. The edge of the rim also varies in thickness from 0.91mm at the top near the swivel to 0.40mm around the lower area. Case solved I think.

Thank you both for your quick and concise help in solving this mystery. The family member I am dealing with will understand, although I still need to try to prove that he did actually serve in that area if I can. I will of course warn the family that they should not try to sell this medal group as he does have entitlement to this QSA.

Sometimes in cases such as this, there is a reason why the person had the medal named for them. It would be very interesting to see in what capacity he did serve in the Boer War.
