I've seen a few SAMIF discs like this. I think they were adapted by the recipients to wear as fobs on their watch chain. That way they could show their medal in civilian dress as many of them never wore uniform again.

Personally I believe in restoration.

We are lucky to have a master Jeweller who restores medals and mounts bars, clasps etc. After seening a broched mount medal restored to it's original state is great. I know a lot of people are sentimental about these ideas but if a medal is missing a bar or have bars that the chap was not entitled to, correct it!

Remember many medals have had clasps added by dealers and collectors to inflate prices back in the 60's and 70's, so to say that was how it was worn might not always be be correct.

Brian

Brian,

I fully agree with your statements. I also have had and will continue to have medals restored that are damaged or perhaps broken and/or incorrect. I always prefer to bring them back to their original/issued condition. I see absolutely nothing wrong in correcting a medal.

For me, the important point is how did the recipient or relative wear it? It would take less than a day in the Mint to prepare and the recipient will have had it for a life time!
