Hi Mike

The volume you mention is a partial record of medals named locally in Cape Town between 22 Dec 1904 and 25 October 1908. A lot of CofGHGS medals are in it : this explains the previously suspect "Cape Naming" (See article by Dr Frank Mitchell in OMRS Journal January 1981).

It is a valuable document that shows many "re-named" medals were actually "Officially named or corrected"

After I had a photocopy of the Register made at the Cape Archives some 20 years ago the original was marked as not to be copied anymore, due to condition. I wonder whether that ban still applies to photographing the original?

Natie Greef at the Castle Museum had plans some years ago to publish an annotated copy of the Register

Hello Mike,
Yes I had noticed the other medals, but, my point remains, the South Africa War medal is really superb! :woohoo:
Best regards Frank

Now I know this is a Anglo Boer War forum, but, I could not help but notice your South Africa medal to Trooper Hewitt and that is indeed a lovely example.
He joined the Frontier Light Horse on the 16th of February 1878 and took his discharge on the 15th of June 1879 after taking part in operations against the Gaikas, Galekas and "other kaffir tribes" and as well as Sekukuni's men, he was engaged with the Zulu in 1879.
A really superb medal, Mike! :)

Hi Mike

Knew this guy's name rang a name with me, just checked my books and he was known to have rescued another trooper at Hlobane (no Gallantry medal or MID's). As such please do grab it even if your not going for it as I'd certainly pay well over the odds for it. Hlobane is my greatest interest

Regards

Hi Mike,

This is what I have on Hewitt:

Enlisted 16.2.78. Trooper, Frontier Light Horse (No11).
Gaika and Gaeleka War 1877-78.

Zulu War 1879
He was mentioned in Buller’s post Hlobane dispatches of 29.3.79. Discharged 15.6.79.

FROM Csimpson

All,

Recently I was in the Cape Archives and wads looking through the Government Records dealing with medals being engraved. In a book (DD 1/310) which is a list of all medals to be "Sent to Seales" for engraving I noticed that C. Hewitt’s SAGS and CGHSM were sent for engraving on 5.4.05 – together! His SAGS was too the FLH and his CGHSM was down as RSM, Landrey’s Horse. This would seem to confirm they are one and the same man. This book lists mainly QSA’s and SAGS. Its interesting to not it also includes medals being re-engraved and altered; for example a rank change.
